The first note to mention the kite game is a document from China about 2500 BCE. The discovery of a cave painting on the island of Muna, Southeast Sulawesi, at the beginning of the 21st century that gives the impression of people playing a kite sparked speculation about the traditions that are more than that in the archipelago. It is suspected that there has been a mutual development between traditions in China and in the archipelago because in the archipelago there are many primitive forms of kites made from leaves. In the archipelago itself the first record of the kite is of Malay History (Sulalatus Salatin) (17th century) which tells of a kite festival followed by a royal authority.
From China, the kite game spread to the West until then popular in Europe.
The kite was famous when used by Benjamin Franklin when he was studying lightning.
