Surviving a COVID-19 Layoff or Furlough

COVID-19 has caused thousands of businesses across the country to close their doors and send millions home. In the 6 weeks ending April 30, 2020, 30 million Americans filed an initial unemployment claim - that is 18% of the total American workforce. In order to cushion those who are laid off or put on furlough, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, or CARES, was passed and gives a broad range of relief and stimulus programs $2.2 trillion for individuals and businesses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, more people have been included in unemployment benefits. Nontraditional workers such as freelancers, gig workers, and self-employed workers are able to receive benefits of unemployment, so have those who quit due to reasons relating to COVID-19, and recent hires who were supposed to start work but weren’t able to.
