Bible and leadership: For they abandoned the law of the Most High; so the kings of Judah came to an end. Ben Sira 49:4

The sapiential books such as the Book of Ben Sira in the Bible not only consist of beautiful practical advice to apply to everyday life, but are also spiritual books that explain how societies and leaderships succeed or fail.
The Bible relates that the Israelites managed to consolidate independent states from the conquest of Canaan with Joshua until the defeat of King Zedekiah by the Babylonian Empire, adding a brief period of time after the division of Alexander's empire until Roman domination in Judea. And during this period of freedom recounted by the Bible, there were many leaderships, some edifying and upright but others chaotic and destructive. And in his spiritual message about the importance of wisdom, the wise Ben Sira in his book taught precisely why leadership fails or succeeds.
And to understand this problem the sapiential books affirm: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13. The law itself is not enough, the Holy Scriptures teaches; common sense that comes from the fear of God (constancy, firmness, and devotion) is needed to apply the law correctly.
About leadership when the spiritual gift of fear of God fails everything fails, and not only that, the leadership determines the course of nations, as happened with Jeroboam, this King after the political schism sinned gravely against the God of Moses by introducing idolatry in Israel, and the Israelites followed the sins of their King, condemning the Kingdom to chaos and destruction. This is why Israel prospered and was blessed when its kings and leaders feared God, without exception.
And all this leaves a very clear message: true spirituality begins and ends with the teaching of the fear of God and the wisdom that emerges as a hidden treasure with this gift.
It is for all this that Ben Sira wrote with wisdom in his book:
"Except for David, Hezekiah, and Josiah,
they were all great sinners,
for they abandoned the law of the Most High;
so the kings of Judah came to an end" Ben Sira 49:4.
Like all wise men, Ben Sira invited men to reflect on the knowledge of God because only in this way can men and their leaders be blessed.
