Spiritual leadership: Deliver the oppressed from their oppressors; right judgment should not be repugnant to you

The fight against oppression is one of the characteristics of spiritual leadership. And about the opposition between benevolent and oppressive men there are numerous examples in the Bible. Just as there were tyrants who imposed injustice, like Sennacherib, ruler of Assyria, who deported the Israelites from his country, or like King Nebuchadnezzar, ruler of the Babylonian empire, who razed Jerusalem and its inhabitants; there were also benefactors of humanity who with their mercy (compassion, kindness) helped the needy and oppressed, like Moses who rescued the Hebrews from Egypt, or like Cyrus, king of the Medes and Persians, who freed the Jews deported to Babylon and allowed them to rebuild Jerusalem.
The ways of God are mercy, piety, and perseverance; for this reason the teacher of wisdom Ben Sira tells us how we should behave with oppression if we want to please the Lord:
"Deliver the oppressed from their oppressors;
right judgment should not be repugnant to you" Ben Sira 4:9.
Deceit, lies, and oppression are manifestations of everything that is contrary to the sovereignty of God among men, man as the enemy of man.
Oppression is one of the most destructive factors for human beings; because oppression has as its main objective to destroy all hope, and this drives even the most intelligent man crazy: "Surely oppression destroys a wise man's reason" Ecclesiastes 7:7.
All the prophets, even the teacher Jesus as the "son of man", had to deal with this problem; because oppression manifests itself in multiple forms, oppression can not only be military or political but also cultural. That is why the master of wisdom Ben Sira continued with his teaching and explained that what is most strongly opposed to oppression are the small acts of mercy: "Be like a father to orphans, and take the place of a husband to widows" Ben Sira 4:10.
