people well with me is our chief International correspondent leas ducet uh leas thank you for being here I know you've been watching events unfolding in Iran for the last few days and we were seeing some of the pictures there this is very much the the imagery that the Iranian State wants the world to see right now isn't it people turning out people people showing that that solidity really that that continuity this is almost a signature image of that has really been uh shown across the world ever since the Islamic revolution of
where there were millions of people onto the streets and every time there is a major event including significant funerals this is what they do they call people onto the streets there is some of that is genuine sorrow that people are coming to more and we've seen people sobbing pushing forward in that Crush of people I mean look at the images the way you can see they're losing control of the the casket I was actually at the funeral in of the first revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ki and the casket was carried through the
crowds he actually fell out of the coffin there was such a frenzy I think they'll control it more but you can see how the people are carrying it this is not just allowing people to mourn it is also a moment as you say for uh the Islamic Republic for its ruling conservatives to project power to Project Unity to project continuity because they are doing it in the midst of what have been uh posts on social media of people celebrating there have been warnings in the past few days by the top prosecutor that people should
not in his words spread lies and insult police cases have been filed by some Iranian uh websites but Iran in in broadcasting these pictures there's live images on state television is to go across Iran and they know the world is watching and this was such a a sign ific event that happened and and the death of a president in many other countries around the world would be a real moment where the state would stop things would change but not so in Iran in the same way yes it just it literally came out of the sky this uh this helicopter crash
that three helicopters in a convoy going to aeran and across mountainous Terrain in very bad weather very heavy fog um the helicopter carrying Ibraham reesi and his foreign minister Hussein Amir ABD on came down so of course it was a shock but the president in the structure of the Islamic Republic is not the most powerful person and ibraim RI is not regarded as the most powerful president in Iranian history in fact he came to power in elections where all of the main Challengers reformist candidates even moderate conservatives were
excluded from running so not surprising it had a very low turnout in fact the lowest ever turnout in a presidential election Ibrahim REI was seeing that he was possibly being groomed to take on the top job so that has that process has been disrupted they will be scrambling now to find a person in the same mold as Ibrahim RI hardliner conservative ideological loyal absolutely loyal to the supreme leader to replace him but when it comes to policy as you say the direction of foreign policy including direction of policy including foreign
policy that is in the hands of the supreme leader and more and more the Islamic revolutionary guard Corp it won't change
