Oregon myrtle, with the botanical name umbellularia californica, is a large broadleaf tree native to the coastal forests that extend into Oregon and the coastal and hillside forests of Sierra California.

In California, the tree is called California bay laurel, which can be shortened to California bay or California laurel.

The tree has a sharp taste similar to that of bay laurel leaves, but it is so strong that it is sometimes mistaken for a bay laurel leaf.

It is also called pepperwood, spicebush, cinnamon bush, peppernut tree, headache tree, mountain laurel, and balm of heaven.
