Oregon myrtle, scientific name umbellularia californica, is a large hardwood tree native to the coastal and foothill forests of Sierra California and the coastal forests that extend into Oregon.
In Oregon, the tree is called Oregon myrtle, and in California it is known as California bay laurel, or California bay or California laurel for short.
The leaves are aromatic, lance-shaped with fine margins, 3-15 cm long and about one-third as wide, similar to bay laurel but narrower and with less contracted margins.
The Pomo and Yuki tribes of Mendocino County place the leaves in their nostrils to treat headaches or soak their heads in the laurel leaves.
