The cast iron plant, which is botanically called aspidistra elatior, is a species of flowering plant in the asparagaceae family.
It is also known by the name of bar-room plant. In Japanese, it is known as haran or baran.
The plant is an evergreen rhizome that can grow up to 60 cm long and has fleshy, shiny, dark green leaves 30-50 cm long.
The leaves and roots are vulnerable to hoofed mammals such as deer, rats and rabbits.
Although this plant is sometimes thought to have originated in China, it is actually native to Taiwan and the islands of southern Japan.
