Sakaki, whose botanical name is cleyera japonica, is a flowering evergreen tree native to warm regions of Japan, Taiwan, China, Myanmar, Nepal, and northern India.
The bark is reddish brown and smooth, and the tree can reach a height of 10 meters.
The leaves are oval, smooth, and glossy, dark green above and yellowish green below, with deep grooves on the petiole.
The tree is considered sacred to Japanese Shinto beliefs and is one of the typical offerings to shrines.
