Shingle oak, whose botanical name is quercus imbricaria, has oblong leaves that are about 7 to 17 cm long and 2.5 to 5 cm wide. The edges are smooth and slightly wavy.

The underside is light green and covered with white hairs, while the upper side is dark green and shiny. In autumn, the leaves turn yellowish brown.

The stem remains smooth for many years. Only in older specimens does the bark become slightly roughened and grooved.

In ancient times, logs of quercus imbricaria were made to make roof tiles (shingles).
