The cherry laurel, scientifically known as prunus laurocerasus, is a species of evergreen cherry tree native to southwestern Asia and southeastern Europe adjacent to the Black Sea.
Also known as the common laurel and sometimes as the English laurel in North America, it is an evergreen shrub or small to medium-sized tree.
Its Latin name laurocerasus means that its leaves and appearance are similar to the bay leaf (laurus nobilis, a true laurel tree in the lauraceae family).
The plant is widely cultivated as an ornamental and is found in gardens and parks in warm climates throughout the world.
