Japanese holly (scientific name: ilex crenata) is a species of flowering plant in the holly genus of the family aquifoliaceae.
Also called box-leaved holly, it is native to eastern China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Sakhalin.
It is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a height of 3-5 m and a trunk as thick as 20 cm.
The leaves are small, glossy, dark green with wavy margins and sometimes thorns.
Because of its dense foliage, Japanese holly is often grown as an ornamental.
