Shingle oak, scientific name quercus imbricaria, is a deciduous tree of the red oak group of oaks.
The leaves are scalloped and margined, shaped like laurel leaves. They are 8-20 cm long and 1.5-7.5 cm wide, light green above and pale and slightly hairy below.
The tree is native primarily to the Midwest and Upper South regions of North America and is most commonly found growing in well-drained uplands.
The tree was once important in producing the shingles that gave it its common name.
