The American hornbeam, whose scientific name is carpinus caroliniana, is a small hardwood tree in the genus carpinus.

This tree, also called blue-beech, ironwood, musclewood and muscle beech, is native to eastern North America.

It is a small tree that can reach 10 to 15 meters in height and often has a longitudinal groove or twist in its trunk.

The leaves are alternate, with prominent veins and a distinctive wavy texture and serrations.
