Bay tree or bay laurel, whose botanical name is laurus nobilis, is an evergreen tree or large shrub in the flowering plant family Lauraceae.
It is an evergreen shrub or small aromatic tree with smooth, glossy green leaves that vary in size and may grow 7 to 18 meters tall.
Bay tree is a dioecious plant (monoecious). This means that male and female flowers are on separate plants.
Because the leaves and smell are similar to bay laurel, many other plant species around the world are also called "bay" or "laurel".
