The bigleaf hydrangea, whose scientific name is hydrangea macrophylla, is a species of flowering plant in the hydrangeaceae family native to Japan.
Also called French hydrangea, lacecap hydrangea, mophead hydrangea, penny mac and hortensia, it is a deciduous shrub up to 2 m tall with large pink or blue flowers in summer and fall.
Its rich foliage and large size make it a beautiful backdrop for white and light-colored flowers, tall perennials and annuals.
In Japan, hydrangea leaves are fermented to make a drink called amacha.
