Black nightshade with the scientific name solanum nigrum is a species of flowering plant in the solanum genus, native to Eurasia and introduced to the Americas, Australia, and South Africa.
Also called European black nightshade or blackberry nightshade, it usually grows to a height of 30 to 120 cm.
The leaves are ovate to heart-shaped with wavy or large serrations on the edges. Both surfaces may or may not be hairy, and the upper petiole has wings.
Berries have long been consumed around the world, for example in Indonesia, where the berries and young leaves are prepared as ranti (Javanese food) and leunca (Sundanese food).
