The blackfruit cornel, scientifically known as cornus sessilis, is a species of dogwood endemic to Northern California.
Also called blackfruit dogwood or miner's dogwood, it is a shrub or small tree reaching a maximum height of 5 meters.
The tree grows naturally in the Cascade Mountains, Sierra Nevada Mountains, and along riverbanks in the coastal mountains.
The leaves are deciduous, green with deeply striped ovals that turn red before falling off.
