Cherry laurel, whose botanical name is prunus laurocerasus, is a species of evergreen cherry tree (prunus). It is an evergreen shrub or small to medium sized tree.
The tree may grow to a height of 5 to 15 meters (16 to 49 feet), but seldom reaches 18 meters (59 feet), with a trunk width of up to 60 cm.
It is also knows as a common laurel, and sometimes also known as the English laurel in North America. The tree is native to southwest Asia and southeast Europe, adjacent to the Black Sea.
Cherry laurel is a widely cultivated ornamental plant. It is widely grown in gardens and parks in warm climates all over the world.
Another species that is similar in appearance is the Portuguese laurel (prunus lusitanica), but can be distinguished by its sharply toothed leaves and red petioles.
