The scientific name for chinese mahonia, fortune mahonia, or holly grape is berberis fortunei. This evergreen shrub is one of the many members of the barberry family.
It is a shade plant, but in some areas will grow in shade with just enough sunlight. It can be used in mass plantings or as a single shrub in small areas or small gardens.
This plant is endemic to China and Taiwan, and having been imported to Japan after the Meiji era. Habitats include forests, shrubs, roadsides, riversides, and the edges of cultivated fields.
