Cowbane, whose botanical name is oxypolis rigidior, is a species of flowering plant in the carrot family native to eastern North America.
This plant, also known as common water dropwort, stiff cowbane, or pig-potato, is a herbaceous perennial that may grow to a height of two to six feet.
Cowbane plants are toxic to mammals, with their roots and tops are both toxic.
The leaves are compound and, oddly enough, pinnate with seven to eleven leaflets that vary in shape, making them difficult to identify.
