Dawn redwood, whose botanical name is metasequoia glyptostroboides, is a fast-growing but endangered conifer.
The tree is fast growing, reaching a height of over 35 meters and a trunk diameter of 1 meter in 50 years.
The leaves are opposite, 1-3 cm long, bright fresh green, and turn reddish brown in the fall.
Dawn redwood is the only living species of the genus Metasequoia, one of three genera in the subfamily Sequoia of the cypress family.
