Deodar cedar, whose scientific name is cedrus deodara, is an evergreen coniferous tree with a conical crown when young and rounded when mature.

Also called Himalayan cedar or deodar, it is native to Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and the Hindu Kush Himalayan region from western Nepal to Tibet.

The trees are an important component of temperate forests on the north-facing valley slopes, where precipitation is average but mostly in the form of snow in winter .

Deodar cedar forests were favorite meditation sites of ancient Indian ascetics.
