Diospyros is a genus of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs that includes more than 700 species.
Species of this genus are important and conspicuous trees in many endemic ecosystems, including the lowland dry forests of the former Maui Nui of Hawaii.
Some species are prized for their hard, heavy, dark wood, commonly known as ebony, while other species are valued for their fruit, known as persimmon.
The leaves of trees of this genus are often used as food for the larvae of many lepidopterous species.
