The eastern redbud, whose scientific name is cercis canadensis, is a shrub or small tree with large leaves.

This plant is native to eastern North America and is cultivated in parks and gardens.

In the wild, the eastern redbud is a low tree commonly found in mixed forests and as a hedge.

The leaves are food for caterpillars, insects, and moths. The flowers can be eaten fresh or fried.

The flowers are showy, magenta-pink, and bloom from spring to early summer. It appears directly on the bare stem before the leaves and sometimes on the stem itself.

The fruits are flat, dry, brown, with pea-like pods, and ripen from August to October.
