The English holly with the scientific name ilex aquifolium is a species of flowering plant in the family aquifoliaceae.

Also called holly, common holly, European holly, and sometimes Christmas holly, it is native to western and southern Europe, northwestern Africa, and southwestern Asia.

The tree is 10 to 25 meters tall with a trunk width of 40 to 80 cm.

The leaves are evergreen and last about 5 years. They are oval and leathery, with a dark green upper surface and light-colored underside.

On young adult trees and lower limbs, the leaves have 3 to 5 sharp spines on each side, alternately pointing up and down.
