The fig tree, whose botanical name is ficus, is a genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes of the moraceae family.
The tree is native throughout the tropics, with several species spread throughout the semi-warm temperate zone, and collectively known as the fig tree or fig fruit.
Most of these tree species have edible fruit, usually eaten as bush food and of only local economic importance.
However, figs have considerable cultural importance throughout the tropics, both as a subject of tradition and for many practical uses.
