Flowering dogwood, botanically named cornus florida, is a species of flowering tree in the cornaceae family. It is native to eastern North America and northern Mexico.
This tree is a small deciduous tree that grows only to a height of 10 meters (33 feet). But it is a wide tree with the stems can reach up to 30 cm (1 foot) in diameter.
The wood is very hard and dense and is used for products such as golf club heads, mallets, wooden rake teeth, tool handles, jeweler's boxes and butcher's blocks.
It propagates readily by seed, i.e., sown in the fall in rows of sawdust or sand, and emerges in the spring.
Flowering dogwood is the tree and flower of Virginia, Missouri, and North Carolina.
