Fragrant osmanthus, whose scientific name is osmanthus fragrans, is a species native to Asia, from the Himalayas to southern China, Taiwan, southern Japan, Southeast Asia, and even Cambodia and Thailand. It is also called sweet osmanthus, sweet olive, tea olive, and fragrant olive.
The flowers are fragrant, with a scent of ripe peaches and apricots. For this reason, it is widely grown as an ornamental plant in East Asian gardens, as well as in gardens in Europe, North America, and elsewhere in the world.
Judging from its flowering time, fragrant osmanthus is closely associated with the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. In traditional Chinese medicine, osmanthus tea is used as an herbal tea for the treatment of menstrual irregularities.
In addition, in some parts of North India, especially in Uttarakhand, the flowers of fragrant osmanthus are used to protect clothing from insects.
