The hardy kiwi, scientifically known as actinidia arguta, is a perennial vine native to Japan, South Korea, North Korea and the Russian Far East.
Unlike most other species in its genus, this plant produces small kiwi fruits without the hair-like fibers that cover the outside.
The fruits are often called Siberian gooseberry, Siberian kiwi, hardy kiwifruit, kiwi berry, arctic kiwi, baby kiwi, dessert kiwi, grape kiwi, northern kiwi, or cocktail kiwi.
The fruit is edible, about the size of a berry or grape, similar in taste and appearance to kiwifruit, but green, brownish, or purple in color, with smooth, sometimes reddish skin.
They are sweeter than kiwifruit and can be eaten whole without peeling.
