Japanese beech, whose scientific name is fagus crenata, is a deciduous tree of the beech family, fagaceae.
Also called Siebold's beech or buna (in Japan), it is endemic to Japan.
The tree is widely distributed and is one of the main trees in Japanese deciduous forests.
Japanese beech grows in well-drained loamy or sandy soils and can reach heights of up to 35 meters.
The leaves are simple and alternate along the branches.
