The Japanese chinquapin, scientific name castanopsis cuspidata, is a species of castanopsis that is native to southern Japan and Korea.

Many species of fungi, including shiitake, which literally means castanopsis mushroom, are host to the dead wood of this tree.

The leaves have a leathery texture, with intact or irregularly toothed margins, and are about 5 to 9 cm long and 2 to 4 cm wide.

It is a medium-sized evergreen tree related to beech and oak that can grow up to 20-30 m tall.
