The Japanese nutmeg-yew, whose scientific name is torreya nucifera, is a slow-growing conifer.
Also called kaya or Japanese torreya, it is native to southern Japan and Jeju Island, Korea.
The leaves are evergreen, needle-like with sharply pointed tips, growing in a spiral pattern, twisting at the base and flattening out on both sides of the stem.
Because of its beautiful golden color and the clicking sound of the stones on its surface, the wood is used for Go boards and Shogi boards.
