Japanese oak, with scientific name lithocarpus edulis, is a relative of the oak tree native to Japan. The tree is very hardy and has a very exotic air about it.

The tree is small and wide and may grow up to 10 feet in 15 years in full sun or light shade and in moderately well-drained soil.

The young leaves are pale green and look delicious, a stark contrast to the shiny dark green leaves of the previous year.

The seeds (or acorns) are edible (hence the name "edulis", means edible).

Because of its slow growth, this tree is best potted for a while.
