The laurel cherry, with scientific name prunus laurocerasus, is a species of evergreen shrub or small to medium-sized tree, that belongs to the evergreen cherry (prunus).
It is also known as common laurel, and sometimes as the English laurel in North America, and is native to southwest Asia and southeast Europe adjacent to the Black Sea.
The tree is a widely cultivated ornamental plant in temperate regions of the world and is commonly used for planting in gardens and parks.
Due to its rapid growth, evergreen habit and tolerance to drought and shade, this tree is highly competitive and can even kill native plant species.
