Ligustrum lucidum, also known as glossy privet, is a large evergreen shrub or small tree that is native to China. It is a popular ornamental plant in many parts of the world, and is also used as a hedgerow or screen plant.
The leaves of Ligustrum lucidum are opposite, glossy dark green, 6–17 centimetres (2.4–6.7 in) long and 3–8 centimetres (1.2–3.1 in) broad. They have entire margins, pointed tips (i.e. acute apices) and rounded (i.e. obtuse) bases. The leaves are hairless (i.e. glabrous), leathery in texture, and oppositely arranged along the stems. Their upper surfaces are dark green and glossy in appearance, while their undersides are paler and duller (i.e. the leaves are discolorous).
The flowers of Ligustrum lucidum are small, white, fragrant, bisexual, numerous, in pyramidal clusters at branch tips. They bloom in late spring or early summer. The fruits of Ligustrum lucidum are small, black berries that are poisonous to humans and animals.
