The mousehole tree, scientific name myoporum laetum, is a member of the scrophulariaceae family endemic to New Zealand, including the Chatham Islands.

Also called ngaio, it is a fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 10 meters tall and 0.3 meters in trunk diameter.

The leaves are lance-shaped with numerous translucent spots on the leaf and margin and small serrations around the outer half.

The leaves of this tree contain Ngaione liver toxin, which can cause disease and death in horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, and other livestock.
