Ninebark, scientific name physocarpus opulifolius, is a species of flowering plant in the family rosaceae.

It is also known as common ninebark, Eastern ninebark, Atlantic ninebark, and is native to eastern North America.

In eastern North America, this plant is found on rocky hillsides, river banks, and in damp undergrowth.

This species can adapt to a very wide range of conditions: wet to dry, acidic to alkaline, gravel to heavy clay. It can also grow from partial shade to full sun.

The bark peels off into thin paper strips, exposing the brown inner bark, which resembles the shape of a number nine, hence the name ninebark.
