Commonly called ninebark, this plant has the scientific name physocarpus opulifolius. It is a shrub native to Missouri.
This shrub is upright, spreading, slightly leathery, deciduous, and closely related to the genus Spiraea.
It is called ninebark because the bark on mature branches peels off into several layers of reddish to light brown inner bark.
When summer is at its peak, its purple leaves tend to turn green in hot climates.
In their natural habitat, ninebarks usually grow along rivers, rocky banks, gravel bars, and damp bushes.
