Oleander or nerium (scientific name is nerium oleander) is a shrub or small tree grown as an ornamental and landscape plant in temperate and subtropical regions of the world.
Because oleander's natural habitat is along rivers, the genus name Nerium is Latin for the Greek word water nros.
The plant is native to a wide area from Northwest Africa and the Iberian Peninsula east through the Mediterranean region to the Arabian Peninsula, South Asia, and Yunnan Province in southern China.
Because it is toxic, one should be very careful not to ingest any part of this plant, including its sap and its dried leaves and twigs.
Oleander has a history of cultivation for thousands of years, especially in the great ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean.
