The pond cypress, whose scientific name is taxodium ascendens, is a coniferous plant of the genus taxodium that reaches an average height of 15 to 18 meters.

The plant is native to North America and grows naturally in shallow ponds, lakeshores, marshes, and wetlands.

The leaves are only 3 to 10 mm long, narrow, and are on shoots that tend to be erect rather than spreading.

The trunk is broad at the base, especially on young trees, which helps anchor it to soft, muddy soil.
