Quercus myrsinifolia, also known by a variety of charming names including bamboo-leaf oak, Chinese evergreen oak, and Chinese ring-cupped oak, is a truly fascinating tree native to East Asia.

Standing out from its fellow oaks, Quercus myrsinifolia boasts evergreen foliage, a rarity amongst oaks typically known for shedding their leaves in fall. These evergreen leaves are the star of the show, earning the tree its "bamboo-leaf" nickname. They are long and slender, resembling bamboo leaves in shape, and range from 2-4 centimeters wide and 5-15 centimeters long. The leaves have a glossy, deep green sheen on their upper surface, and a lighter green or even slightly bronze hue underneath. New growth emerges a stunning reddish-purple before maturing to its glossy green state, adding a touch of seasonal flair to the tree.

Quercus myrsinifolia can reach a mature height of 20 meters (66 feet) with a similar spread, creating a stunning presence in landscapes. Its form is typically described as a rounded crown or a spreading pyramidal shape. While it grows at a moderate pace, it can live for centuries, becoming a majestic and enduring feature in parks and gardens.

Beyond its beautiful leaves, Quercus myrsinifolia also produces inconspicuous acorns in the fall. These acorns are small, ovoid to ellipsoid in shape, and measure roughly 14-25 millimeters long. They have a smooth, glabrous (hairless) surface and a cupule (cap) that encloses about a third to half of the acorn.

This remarkable tree thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun, although it can tolerate some shade. It's known for its adaptability and hardiness, making it a popular choice for gardeners in مناطق معتدلة (nìngquàn mìngzhèng dìqū) (temperate zones). It even demonstrates some resistance to pests and diseases, adding to its appeal.

Overall, Quercus myrsinifolia offers a unique combination of evergreen beauty, interesting foliage, and a majestic presence. If you're looking for a conversation-starting tree that provides year-round interest, the bamboo-leaf oak is a fantastic choice.
