Red cedar with the scientific name juniperus virginiana is a species of juniper native to eastern North America from southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and east of the Great Plains.

It is also known as eastern red cedar, Virginian juniper, eastern juniper, red juniper, and other local names.

This plant is a coniferous evergreen that grows slowly and compactly and will not become a shrub in poor soils.

There are two types of leaves. The young leaves are sharp and spread out like needles, while the mature leaves are tightly attached like scales.

These leaves are arranged in opposite, debating pairs or sometimes in triple circles.
