Selaginella is the only genus in the family Selaginellaceae that is vascular plant.
Species in this genus are creeping or ascendant with simple scale-like leaves (microphylls) on branched stems that also have roots that appear.
The stems are aerial, creeping horizontally above the substratum, sub-erect or upright.
The genus Selaginella grows mainly in the tropics, with some species also found in the arctic-alpine zone of both hemispheres.
Under dry conditions, some species of Selaginella can tolerate dehydration.
