Shell ginger, scientific name alpinia zerumbet, is a type of perennial ginger native to East Asia.
It is most commonly called "ginger shell" or "shell flower" because of its pink, shell-like flowers, especially when budding.
This plant grows best in moderately rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
Shell ginger is also called by several other names in English, including "pink porcelain lily," "variegated ginger," "butterfly ginger," and "light galangal."
Indigenous Okinawans who eat a traditional diet that includes shell ginger have a statistically very long life expectancy.
