The shingle oak, scientific name quercus imbricaria, is a deciduous tree of the red oak group of oaks.
It is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 20 meters tall with a trunk diameter of 1 meter.
The tree is native to the Midwest and the Deep South of North America, from southern New York to northern Illinois and eastern Kansas, as well as central Alabama and southern Arkansas.
Unlike most other oaks, this oak has laurel leaves, 8-20 cm long and 1.5-7.5 cm wide, with scalloped edges. The color is light green on the upper surface and pale and slightly hairy on the lower surface.
