Camphora officinarum, also known as the camphor tree or simply camphor laurel, is a majestic evergreen with a rich history and interesting characteristics, particularly its leaves.

Standing tall and proud, the camphor tree can reach heights of 20 to 30 meters (66 to 98 feet), with some giants in Japan boasting a trunk circumference exceeding 20 meters! Its presence is undeniable, with a light brown or greyish-brown bark that's rough and fissured, often hinting at the aromatic secrets it holds.

The true stars of the show, however, are the camphor tree's leaves. Arranged in an alternate pattern along the branches, they can reach lengths of 4.5 to 11 centimeters (1.8 to 4.3 inches) and widths of 2.4 to 6 centimeters (0.9 to 2.4 inches). The most striking feature is their shape – elliptical with a glossy, almost waxy surface that shimmers in the sunlight. But their beauty goes beyond the visual.

Crush a camphor leaf between your fingers, and a distinct, invigorating aroma fills the air. This is the essence of camphor, a natural oil concentrated within the leaves and other parts of the tree. This powerful fragrance isn't just pleasant; it's a calling card, a way for the tree to defend itself against insects and herbivores.

Beyond their aromatic properties, the leaves play a vital role in the tree's life cycle. They act as solar panels, capturing sunlight and converting it into energy through photosynthesis. This energy fuels the tree's growth, allowing it to reach its impressive stature.

However, it's important to remember that while camphor has medicinal uses, the leaves themselves can be toxic if ingested in large quantities. It's always best to admire them from afar and appreciate their contribution to the tree's beauty and ecological role.
