Western redcedar, scientifically named thuja plicata, is an evergreen coniferous tree of the cupressaceae family.
Also called Pacific redcedar, giant arborvitae, western arborvitae, just cedar, giant cedar, or shinglewood, it is native to western North America.
This plant is a large to very large tree that can reach a height of 45 to 70 meters and a trunk diameter of 2.4 to 7 meters.
The leaves form flat sprays with opposite pairs of scale-like leaves in contiguous pairs at 90 degree angles to each other.
Individual leaves are very small, 1-4 mm long and 1-2 mm wide in most cases.
