Learning English it's not that easy. Sometimes it might be a little difficult or confusing. For example: Their/There/They’re.

  • Their: It is the possessive form of “they”: These are not their socks.
  • There: Indicates a place: Sheila is over there.
  • They’re: It is the contraction of “they are”: Where are Paul and Jane? They’re playing outside.

As you can see even the pronunciation it's very similar and confusing.

Today, I want to talk about two verbs that people usually get confused with when they are learning the language.
"DO" and "MAKE". These verbs are translated both as "HACER" in Spanish. Spanish speakers don't understand why there are two verbs for one verb in English. But today I bring the differences of these verbs. With this you will learn which verb you have to use and when to use it.

This is not only for Spanish speakers it's for all of you out there learning this beautiful language "ENGLISH"

Let's get started

When do we use "DO"?
1 To talk about work, job or tasks.
Examples:

  • I do my homework on weekend.
  • I wouldn't like to do that job

Important: When we use the verb "DO" we are not producing any physical object.

2 "DO" is used when we refer to activities in general without being specific. In these cases, we normally use words like thing, something, nothing, anything, everything etc.
Examples:

  • Hurry up! I've got things to do!
  • Don't just stand there – do something!
  • Is there anything I can do to help you?

3 We sometimes use "DO" to replace a verb when the meaning is clear or obvious. This is more common in informal spoken English:
Examples:

  • Do I need to do my hair? (do = brush or comb)
  • I haven't done the dishes yet (done = washed)

Now, we'll be talking about "MAKE"

First, "MAKE is for producing, constructing, creating or building something new. It is also used to indicate the origin of a product or the materials that are used to make something.
Examples:

  • His ring is made of gold.
  • The house was made of adobe.
  • My grandmother makes a delicious chocolate cake.

Second, We also use "MAKE" for producing an action or reaction.
Examples:

  • Onions make your eyes water.
  • You make me happy.
  • It’s not my fault. My brother made me do it!

Some other uses of "MAKE"

For plans and decisions:
Examples:

  • make the arrangements
  • make a choice

For food, drinks and meals:
Examples:

  • make a cake
  • make a cup of tea
  • make dinner

Finally, We use "MAKE" with nouns about speaking and certain sounds:
Examples:

  • make a comment
  • make a noise
  • make a speech

Here are two pictures where you'll see expressions with "DO" and expressions with "MAKE".
