Can Chinese People Understand Me? - Learn Mandarin With Cryptogee - Restaurants

I am learning Mandarin, Chinese at the moment; however it is quite distant from any language I've learned thus far. Unfortunately I don't know any Chinese people who speak Mandarin, so I'm interested to know if a genuine Chinese, Mandarin speaker would be able to understand what the hell I'm saying!

So Chinese people please tell me if you can understand me!

As a side note, I did want to upload this to dtube, however it seems like it is broken at the moment; so I will continue to show my support for the app, once it's fixed.

Not bad! Cryptogee, although the second sentence makes no sense - you probably need to add yao into it to be "I want to drink a glass of water", or you are just stating the fact that you are drinking a glass of water to a waiter/waitress.

Awesome, thanks Kevin! I was a bit nervous as I feel I've been in the bubble of the app, I've been wondering just how good the voice recognition is. My sentences are slowly getting longer, so the next one will have longer more complex phrases. That's the challenge, to remain coherent consistently :-)

Hi, there, I'm Chinese. I would said I understood the first sentence and the last one, but the middle one not quite sure. If you already had one glass of water, you Don't need to tell the waiter, but if you would like a glass of water, yeah, that make senses, the way you said was:" fu wu yuan, wo he le yi bei shui." Anyway, your Chinese is not bad at all. Keep it up!!! JIA YOU!!!

Yes I felt like I messed up the middle one, I didn't mean to say 'he le yi ..' I think I meant to say 'ge wo y bei shui*.

Thanks for the encouragement, I will keep practising and keep posting these videos, hopefully soon I will be able to present the whole 2 minutes in Chinese, that would be amazing! :-D

Cool; I love hearing about region specific accents, plus one of the things I love about Mandarin is that RRRR sound. This is one of the best things about learning a language, I can decide to take up which regional specific accent I want. So yes, I think the Beijing way sounds pretty cool to me :-)

Awesome, thank you for your feedback, and putting my sentences in writing. I am just beginning to recognise certain Chinese characters, however I need to learn their names, as I'm just making up what they're called. Apart from the shoulder hook, I don't know any of the names.

We are loving learning Chinese, I have wanted to learn for so long, ever since the movie; Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, it is such a beautiful language, and I hope one day I can do it justice.

Hello, i speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English. it is awesome that you are interested in learning Chinese (its harder when you don't have the similar system of language based) To be honest, i only understand what you said when you speak in English, good job tho! Keep in mind that it's important to pronounce every word separately. Keep on and have fun learning Chinese!!!

I took one quarter of Chinese in college what seems like a lifetime ago. Really struggled with the four intonations.

But I love Firefly so some day I should at least learn to swear in Chinese. 😜

Yeah I haven't even learned about the four intonations, I am cherry picking from my Hello Chinese app. I'm kinda a ready, fire, aim! kinda guy :-)

Intonation (sentence- or phrase-level pitch variations) is a very minor matter in Chinese. Chinese tones (individual syllables) are much more important.

The Chinese in Firefly is a joke. Please don't take that as a model of any sort.

Thanks for your confidence in me, however it is difficult to know if I'm pronouncing some words correctly. So it is hard to say certain words with confidence.

I use memrise.com, it's pretty useful. I'll have to checkout hello chinese at some point. Edit: looks like I already installed it on my phone, just haven't tried it yet.

I'll check out memrise, I hadn't heard of them. Hello Chinese is so good you have to check it out; to tell the truth I haven't used half of its potential.

Not only does it teach you to write and test your pronunciation, it also has loads of written theory and you can learn about the structure of the language as you go on, if that's your thing.

Also there seems to be a new youtube video every week, and it's linked to an online forum where you can practice. Phew! Eventually I'll start using it more, for the moment though, it's more than adequate :-)

Thank you! You should use an app called DuoLingo to learn Spanish, it's a great app and will teach you useful, practical Spanish. Russian is definitely on my list, I love the way it sounds and I think I would enjoy learning; plus then I could speak to people on Golos! :-)

That's awesome that you've taken up Mandarin. I've been living in South Korea for a few years and know a little bit of Korean. Even when I say something with perfect pronunciation (at least I think so) Korean Native speakers sometimes have no clue what I'm saying. frustrating to say the least.

How are you learning Mandarin if you don't mind me asking?

Wow I've listened to Korean and it sounds very difficult :-).

To learn Mandarin I am using an app on my phone called; Hello Chinese. It is absolutely brilliant; it teaches you to write and within a few lessons you are saying some useful things. Plus it connects with your mic and gives you some speech practice as well, which is awesome.

Yes it definitely is a good use; and also I'm hoping it will keep me motivated to carry on. I can see myself going the same way as you if I don't practice with some human beings, so this is a perfect use for that.

Yup, that's why it's so fun! :-) Although saying that there are lots of easy bits. Once you can count from 1-20, you then know how to say the days of the weeks and months, after learning just the words for 'day' and 'month'.

So January is month 1, and Tuesday is day 2, 50 is 5, 10s. So I'm liking that logic and it saves having to memorise days of weeks and months of years. Even the writing is beginning to slowly reveal itself to me. :-)

I like your attitude :) I have many ambitions of all the languages I want to learn, mandarin being the crown-jewel, but sadly you learn a bit slower the older you get, and right now I am doing some French, so the far-east (from where I am right now in Scandinavia) must wait a little.

Good thing about learning language is that you will probably not get senile when you becomes old, so hopefully we will still annoy the Steemit community with reasonably sane post many years ahead :)

Thank you... I do think we learn slower as we age, but that's only because we get out of the habit of learning. The more we do the better we get.

I must revisit French at some point; I was put off it years ago by some Parisians scorning my accent, which is silly really, as I wasn't learning it for them.

Funnily enough, from the little I know about French, I actually think Mandarin could be a good learning partner. The way they do their numbers is very similar to the French, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were other similarities, yet the vocab is different enough not to get confused.

Yes we will stay sharp into our old age, it will be many many years before the blockchain sees the back of us! :-)

Danish is awful ('There's something rotten in the State of Denmark' :P -sorry fellas!) The grammar is silly, the vocabulary is based in English and German mostly so not that hard BUT.....it's like they have 2 languages - one they write and one they pronounce. A simple example of writing comparing to speaking:
Amagerbrogade (it's a street name) is basically pronounced 'Ama-bro-ghel'...so imagine that in nearly ALL words.........neat huh? :P :D
